Technology

The Supply Tracker relies on high-resolution optical imagery taken a few seconds apart to create stereo images of stockpiles. These images are then used to build 3D models, which are then used to create a time series expressed as a volume or mass, depending on the density factor of the relevant commodity.

Use case

Newcastle Coal Terminal

In this example, the client was interested in thermal coal inventories at the port of Newcastle. Kayrros started by mapping the facility and segmenting the different stockyards. Next, Kayrros created 3D models of every stockpile using satellite imagery and proprietary algorithms in computer vision. Finally, the time series of 3D models was converted into a single time series expressed in tons. The ability to compare current inventory levels versus the historical average at one of the largest export terminals in the world is crucial to the fundamental analysis of the coal market.
